I grandi del pensiero

The great thinkers: classics of philosophical and scientific thought in new, contemporary Italian translations.

Why this series

Many of the works that changed the way we think are hard to find in Italian today, or survive only in century-old translations that ask the reader for an effort the author never asked for. «I grandi del pensiero» brings them back in new translations, made from the original and rendered in clear, fluent contemporary Italian, without simplifying the argument.

Every volume is edited, checked in detail and published as an e-book and as a print-on-demand paperback, so that it stays available. No print runs that sell out, no books going out of print: in Aletopoli, an important book stays in print.

In Aletopoli, sapere aude: in the city of truth, dare to know!

Saggio filosofico sulle probabilità

Pierre-Simon Laplace · 1814 · New Italian translation edited by Gregorio Galli

What does it mean to reason when certainty is out of reach? In 1814 Laplace answered with a book without formulas, written for anyone who wants to think clearly: from games of chance to comets, from witnesses to courts of law, to the illusions that make us misjudge chance. This is where «Laplace’s demon» appears, along with the sentence that sums it all up: probability theory «is at bottom nothing but common sense reduced to calculation». Italian edition.
